Short answer
There is no single most private email provider. The right choice depends on what you want to protect and from whom. Proton Mail and Tuta build end-to-end encryption into the mailbox. mailbox.org, Posteo and StartMail focus on European jurisdiction, no ads and PGP support. Fastmail is a privacy-respecting mailbox that does not advertise end-to-end encryption. The list below is in no particular order.
Every provider statement on this page is what the provider says about itself on its own website, read on October 12, 2026. Check the linked pages before you rely on a detail, because plans and policies change.
What makes an email provider private
- Encryption model. Transport encryption (TLS) protects mail between servers. End-to-end encryption means only you and the recipient can read the message content. Mail between two different providers is usually not end-to-end encrypted unless both sides use PGP or a similar scheme.
- Jurisdiction. The country where a provider operates decides which authorities can send it legal requests.
- Business model. A provider that you pay, rather than one funded by advertising, has less reason to analyze your mail.
- Metadata. Sender, recipient and subject lines can reveal a lot even when the body is encrypted. Providers differ on what they encrypt.
- Openness. Open source apps let outsiders inspect how the client behaves.
Private email providers compared
Proton Mail
Proton Mail says it is based in Switzerland and uses end-to-end and zero-access encryption, so message content is encrypted on your device before it reaches Proton's servers. It says its apps are open source and that its code has been independently audited, with the results published on its website. The security page describes encrypted content and does not say whether subject lines are covered. Source: proton.me/mail/security.
Tuta
Tuta states that it is located in Germany with data centers there, and that all user data is end-to-end encrypted, including subject lines, headers and metadata, calendars and contacts. It says its email clients are open source, and it offers a free account. Tuta describes its own encryption scheme rather than PGP. Source: tuta.com/secure-email.
StartMail
StartMail is based in the Netherlands, says Dutch privacy law and the GDPR apply, and advertises no ads, no tracking and no profiling. It supports one-click PGP encryption, unlimited disposable aliases, and lets you send an encrypted message to someone without PGP using a password. It offers a 7-day free trial. mailbox.org
mailbox.org says its servers are located exclusively in Germany (Berlin). It supports PGP in its webmail through Guard, with Mailvelope also supported, S/MIME signing and encryption, and its own PGP key server. It states that it can, on request, encrypt existing unencrypted mail with your own PGP key. The security page links to paid plans and does not mention a free plan. Source: mailbox.org/en/security.
Posteo
Posteo is based in Berlin with servers in German data centers. It lists mandatory TLS for sending and receiving, a crypto mail storage option for the whole mailbox, encryption of calendars, address book and notes, PGP in webmail and two-factor authentication. It states there is no tracking, and that signup and payment can be anonymous. It lists an account price of 1 EUR per month and no free plan. Source: posteo.de/en/site/security.
Fastmail
Fastmail's homepage says there are no ads and no mining or sharing of personal data, and it highlights Masked Email, spy-pixel blocking, a choice of EU or US data residency and a 30-day free trial. The homepage does not describe end-to-end encryption as a feature, so treat Fastmail as a privacy-respecting hosted mailbox rather than an end-to-end encrypted one. Source: fastmail.com.
Gmail and Outlook
Gmail and Outlook are not built around end-to-end encryption. If you stay with either, you can still improve your privacy by tightening account security and by controlling who can reach you. Those two things are different jobs: a private mailbox protects what you store, and screening controls what gets in.
How to choose
- Want encryption built in with no setup: look at Proton Mail or Tuta.
- Want PGP and European hosting with ordinary email apps: look at mailbox.org, Posteo or StartMail.
- Want a hosted everyday mailbox that states it runs no ads: look at Fastmail.
- Want to trial before paying: Tuta lists a free account, StartMail a 7-day trial and Fastmail a 30-day trial.
Private email does not stop unwanted email
A private provider protects the mail you receive, but anyone can still write to the address. Cold outreach, newsletters and recruiters reach a Proton inbox as easily as a Gmail one. That is a separate problem from privacy.
